Wednesday 5th May. League Play Off match vs FC Abbeymeads. Won 3-0

A great game of football with both sides contributing 100%.

For the first 15 minutes Abbeymeads had the upper hand but our defence held out and Pete made a string of fantastic saves to keep us in the match. Slowly the boys took control and after twenty minutes we thought we’d taken the lead when a long throw from Mick just missed Troy and went directly into the net. Five minutes later Mick picked up a through ball, shrugged off two defenders and was one on one with the keeper, there was only ever going to be one outcome 1-0 to Shaw.

Shaw started the second half much stronger and Abbeymeads were restricted to long balls up to their centre forward. Ten minutes in and Lay picked up the ball on the left and sent a great shot over the keeper to put us two up. Abbeymeads came back strongly but just couldn’t take their chances. With less than 10 minutes to go the ball was slotted through to Mick who out paced the Abbeymeads defence and scored a great winning goal to make the final score 3-0 to Shaw

Sunday 18th April. Home League Match against South Cerney. Won 3-1

Last league match of the season and we needed a win to guarantee at least a play off place. The boys started well and were containing South Cerney but we could get our attack going. Frustrated by a number of close offside decisions both Mick & Brad were struggling to get going.

No score at half time but were we quite comfortable.

The second half saw South Cerney step up a gear and start to put us under some pressure but our nerves were calmed by a well taken goal by Brad followed by another from Arnas. 2-0 up and cruising, then South Cerney  won a free kick which they slotted between the defence leaving Pete one on one with their attacker 2-1 and the nerves were back.

Brad then took it upon himself to drop back into centre mid and gave us some stability with the time ticking down Joel picked up a through ball and slotted away our 3rd goal. Game over a 3-1 win

Wednesday 14th April. League match against Cricklade. Won 4-0

With Abbeymeads dropping points at the weekend this was our chance to go 3 points clear at the top and the boys responded well.

We played some of our best football of the season and kept Cricklade in their own half for most of the game. The downside of playing good football was that we seemed to loose our attacking edge. However once again it was Mick to the rescue with a well taken goal late in the first half.

In the second half we kept up the good football but found our edge again and it wasn’t long before Mick put two more goals away and we were cruising. We made a number of changes towards the end of the second half but the boys kept their shape despite Cricklade having a late revival. We finished the game off with a “cheeky” goal from Arnas and came away with a 4-0 win

Sunday 11th April, League match Vs Avonvale. Won 3-5

A real game of two halves. We started the first in great style with Lay weaving his magic and scoring within the first 5 mins. After this we really played some good football but without the cutting edge to extend the lead. Inevitably Avonvale worked their way back into the match and scored a really good goal.

Straight from the Kick off Brad & Mick combined really well to allow Mick to score and put us 2-1 up. Avonvale’s heads dropped and it wasn’t long before Joel got on the end of a great cross to put us 3-1 up. Mick rounded off a good first half with another goal for the boys to go into half time 4-1 up. Game over or so we thought.

We made a number of changes for the second half and we seemed to loose the rhythm of our game. Avonvale came back at us and scored another good goal to peg it back to 4-2. The boys didn’t panic and Brad got a good goal to put us 5-2 up. Then we took out foot of the peddle and let Avonvale in for their 3rd goal of the match.  The last 15 minutes were a bit of a blur with Avonvale pegging us back in our own half but they couldn’t break us down again and we hung on for a 5-3 victory

Sunday 28th Mar. Home league lost 0-2 to Tetbury

Take nothing away from Tetbury, they raised their game to take us on but we were very poor.

Things could have been so different if we’d taken our early chances with Brad & Mick both going close in the first few minutes. Tetbury made life very difficult for us but neither side looked like scoring until late in the first half Tetbury had a long range shot which beat everyone to put them 1-0 up at half time.

At least Shaw competed in the second half but once again we never got a clean shot on goal, Tetbury broke away and a ball crossed in from the left hit Joel on the knee to go into the net and give Tetbury the win.

Sunday 21st March. League Cup Semi Final against Wroughton, lost 1-0

We came so close to causing a major upset against a team a whole division higher than us and who have gone unbeaten all season. Right from the start we imposed our game onto Wroughton restricting them to breakaway attacks and long range efforts.

For 34 of the 35 minute first half Shaw battled, frustrated and played the counter attacking game with the whole team totally committed to winning the game. Then Wroughton slipped their markers and hit a hopeful shot goal bound, Pete had it covered but the ball just bobbled up at the last moment and crossed the line. 1-0 down with less than a minute to half time.

Despite the set back Shaw came out with all guns blazing in the second half and we saw Joel have the best chance of the match but he couldn’t convert it. We then saw Mick put in a perfect cross but there was no one on the back post to finish it off. Then Brad went close with a great shot but it was straight at the keeper. At this point Wrought on took off their two most attacking players a decided to defend the win. Shaw continued to attack but couldn’t find the killer ball for the equaliser.

The final score was disappointing but the whole team can be proud of themselves for making Wroughton sweat and hang onto the 1-0 victory

Sunday March 14th. League Match Won 2-1 against Bassett Rangers

This was one of those games where we were just happy to hear the final whistle. Take nothing away from Bassett Rangers, they wanted this win more than we did and took the game to us right from the start.

The first half saw us rely on breakaway football and luckily Mick came up trumps with his weekly goal to put us 1-0 up. This was followed by Joel scrambling over a crossed ball to put us 2-0 up.

The second half saw Rangers continue to push us to the limit but with little or no end product, then a through ball beat the defence and Bassett pulled one back with about 15 minutes to go. It was back to the wall time with the occasional breakaway from Mick, Brad and Lay.

Releif all round when the final whistle went and we'd held onto the win.

Sunday March 7th, League Cup Quarter Final. Won 0-4 against Pewsham

A fantastic performance against a first division side saw us move in the semi finals of League cup for the first time since we began 11 a side football.

Right from the start we took the game to Pewsham and had a number of chances to get an early lead but the ball just would fall for us. Midway through the first half Brad settled the nerves will a well taken goal and despite Pewsham coming back at us we held firm and went into half time 1-0 up.

Pewsham really went for it in the early part of the second half but we weathered the storm and Joel put us 2-0 up on a counter attack. At this point Pewsham’s heads began to drop and we picked up the pace again and Lay scored a good goal to put us 3-0 up and cruising.

Brad & Mick were causing all sorts of trouble for the Pewsham defence and it wasn’t long before Mick went on a run only to be brought down in the penalty box. Mick converted the penalty to make it 4-0.

Sunday 21st Feb. Away League match against Highworth J. won 2-11

The 11-2 score line doesn’t reflect how hard Highworth pushed us in the first half. Highworth started the better and their midfield gave us a torrid time, it wasn’t long before they took advantage and scored. Last season this would have been when our heads went down and we would have folded, but this season we are much stronger mentally and slowly worked our way back into the match. All of the boys hard work paid off when Brad, who had a fantastic game, pulled one goal back and scored another to put us 2-1 up at half time.

The second half saw us get off to a flying start with Brad scoring his 3rd after a couple of minutes. Then the floodgates opened and every time we went on the attack we looked like scoring goals from Joel, Mick, 2 wonderful goal poaches from Jordon and a hat trick from JP. Its worth mentioning that JP, who has been playing since he was 5, has never scored in a competitive match so his hat trick was something special.

Highworth never gave up and scored a consolation 2nd goal at the end to make the final score 11-2

Sunday 14th Feb. League Match away to Cricklade 1-1

A good result against a very good and determined team. This was always going to be a test for the boys and they battled well.

Playing up hill in the first half we were often on the back foot but the defence held out and we were relying on breakaways to get into the Cricklade half. Lay managed to loose his marker a couple of times but his chances came to nothing, then he picked up the ball on the half way line beat 4 or 5 players and put a perfect ball through to Mick to score.

Shortly after we had a couple of import decisions go against us including an off side call when Brad was clear through on goal.

The second half saw more of the same but we couldn’t take full advantage of the slope. Mick Brad and Joel all had chances but nothing would fall for them. Crickalde were pushing us further and further back and eventually broke our defence for the equalizer. The boys fought back with Mick going close on a couple of occasions and Brad hitting the bar.

For the last 10 minutes we had our backs to the wall but the defence held strong and the game finished 1-1

Sunday 7th Feb. Home League match against Avonvale. Won 4-0

Second match in two days and another great result, against a difficult side, to put us top of the table.

Once again we faced a midfield battle but Peter, Callum & JT worked incredibly hard to give Brad & Mick every opportunity to go for goal. Early in the half Brad played in Mick for the first goal and midway through the half Mick returned the favour to allow Brad to put us two up.

In between Avonvale had caused us quite a few problems but Pete in goal came to our rescue again.

The second half saw more of the same with Avonvale been very solid in midfield but our back for holding on strongly. Then came the goal / cross of the match when Brad pickup the ball on the right wing beat a defender and hit a high ball into the box which looped over the keeper and gave us a 3-0 lead. This was followed but a period of continuous pressure by Shaw which finally paid off when Avonvale cleared an attack straight to Joel who hit a sweet shot into the net to make the final score 4-0

Saturday 6th Feb. League Cup Match against South Cerney. Won 2-0

After 4 or 5 previous attempts this match finally went ahead and the Shaw boys played really well to secure a 2-0 win and progress into the quarter finals.

The match started well with Tom & Peter working well in midfield and Arnas and Joel working hard down the wings. We created a number of chances but just couldn’t get the first goal and the South Cerney keeper kept them in the game more than once. Finally Peter, Mick, Brad and Arnas combined well and Arnas slotted away his first goal of the season.

South Cerney weren’t making it easy for us and a number of time Pete came to our rescue. Up front Mick and Brad were working their socks off, Mick had at least 4 opportunities to extend our lead but hit the post and found the Cerney keeper on top form. 1-0 at half time.

The second half was much the same with both teams playing really well. Shaw then won a corner which Peter swung in, it hit a South Cerney players' head, then a defenders knee and crept over the line to make the score 2-0 and see the boys into the next round

Sunday 24th January, League match away to Eldene Rangers. Won 1-5

After a six week delay we finally get back to playing football and ran out 1-5 winners against a much improved Eldene Rangers.

The match started very quickly and we were on the attack from the start and it wasn’t long before a well taken goal from Mick put us 1-0 up. Twenty minutes in and Mick’s game is over with an injured leg. With Jordan replacing Mick upfront we continued to press and five minutes before half time Brad hit an awesome shot from well outside the box straight into the top corner to give the team a 2-0 lead at half time.

Injuries played a major part in the second half with Matt, Arnas, Chris and Peter all having to come off at some time. However the changes to the team didn’t deter us and the second half saw Jordon get a cracking goal on his debut, Joel score a goal of equal quality to Brad’s and Lay score a good headed goal.

Towards the end of the game the injuries and our lack of fitness began to tell and Eldene worked a good move down the right and scored their consolation goal

Sunday 13th December. Home league match lost 1-2 to FC Abbeymeads

This was our first match for 5 weeks and it showed as we never really got going until the second half. But take nothing away from Abbeymeads they capitalised on our slow start and went one up with less than 5 minutes gone.

The boys battled hard throughout the first half and were closing down Abbeymeads well but we just couldn’t get going up front and our chances were few and far between.

We started the second half better and began to take the game to Abbeymeads but still couldn’t get the equaliser. Then Abbeymeads broke away and scored a good goal, 0-2 down.

We still pushed forward and finally Mick found himself one on one with the keeper and he slotted in the goal, 1-2 and some hope. We continued to make all the running and put the Abbeymeads keeper under pressure with shots from Pete, Mick, Brad and Troy but it was not to be our day and Abbeymeads ran out 1-2 winners

Sunday 8th November. Home league match Vs Bassett Rangers. Won 7-0

A good performance and a great result to take us to the top of the table for the first time this season.

Bassett Rangers started really well and immediately put us under pressure, we suffered a few early scares but Mick soon calmed the nerves will a well taken poacher’s goal. Bassett Rangers continued to cause our back four problems but once again our front two were magnificent and Mick got a second, Joel got a rebound and Brad slotted one home from close range (although it looked like an own goal to most of us we’ll give Brad the benefit of the doubt). 4-0 at half time

Bassett Rangers didn’t give up and it took us 20 minutes into the second half to get back on top. The match was put beyond doubt with Brad getting two more goals and Lay getting another.

7-0 didn’t flatter us but Bassett Rangers are a good footballing side and they never made it easy for us

Sunday 18th October, League match away to Tetbury town. Won 2-3

Our worst performance of the season so far. We started very casually and Tetbury immediately took the game to us. With a revised back four we seemed to loose our stability and Tetbury constantly played the through ball which put us under pressure.

20 minutes in and the inevitable happened, Tetbury caught the defence square, slotted a through ball onto their centre forward who found himself one on one with Pete and Tetbury were 1-0 up. At last we seemed to wake up and started to take the game to the opposition. Chris won a great ball in midfield and set Brad up brilliantly to get us back on track. 1-1 at half time

The second half saw us pick up the pace and start to put the Tetbury goal under pressure but then another good attack from Tetbury saw our defence crumble and we found ourselves 2-1 down. However rather than letting our heads drop we pick ourselves up and went back on the attack. It wasn’t long before Mick and Brads pace were beginning to tell and Brad latched onto a through ball to get us back to 2-2. This was quickly followed by another goal from Mick to finally give us a 3-2 lead.

With Tetbury coming back into the game we suffered a few tense moments in the last 5 minutes but hung on to win the 3 points

Sunday 11th October. Cup match against Bassett Rangers. Won 7-0

A great result but more importantly a good performance and our first clean sheet of the season.

The first half started well with Bassett Rangers causing us some issues, however 5 minutes into the game JT calmed our nerves with a well taken goal. However Bassett Rangers didn’t role over and came back and started to give our defence some problems. 15 minutes in we scored our second goal which was quickly followed by our 3rd to take us into half time with a three nil lead.

The second half saw us swap personnel around and bring on Billy and Troy. It took us a while to settle down but Mick soon settled the nerves with a well taken goal which was swiftly followed up by two more to give him his 3rd hat trick of the season. Billy could have finished the game off completely with a number of close efforts but it was Brad who sealed the victory and gave us a 7-0 win and a smooth route into the last 16 of the cup

Sunday 4th October home league match against Eldene Rangers. Won 7-1

Another good score line but not a great performance, although it was déjà view having already beaten Eldene by the same score two weeks back in the cup.

This time round Eldene started the match sharper but two great corners led to two good goals from Mick and this was followed up by a really sweet goal from Peter to give us a 3-0 lead at half time.

The second half saw our two centre forwards come into their own with Mick getting another 4 goals but at least three of them coming off rebounds from great shots from Brad.

For the last 15 minutes we switched formation and personnel around and this gave Eldene the opportunity to push forward and put our defence under pressure it was from of these attacks that an ex Shaw player, Nath Crittle, hit a good shot into the bottom left hand corner to give Eldene their consolation goal

Sunday 27th September League Match away to South Cerney won 1-5

With the Gaffer taking the team in my absence the boys continued their good start to the season with a 5-1 away win at South Cerney.

By all accounts it was a competitive first half with South Cerney playing well. Shaw scored early on and South Cerney came back with a well taken goal.

The second half saw Shaw come out fighting and score four more away goals to win the match 5-1. Shaw goals were from Mick (3), Brad & Joel

Sunday 20th September cup match home to Eldene Rangers. Won 7-1

A very satisfying performance to get through to the second round of this years League Cup.

The first half saw us totally dominate the game with the strength and pace of Mick & Brad doing most of the damaged. With Peter & Whitey running midfield and Joel & Lay working hard on the wings we took a 4-0 lead into half time with two goals each from Brad and Mick.

The second half saw a change in personnel with Mick & Lay dropping to the bench and Billy and Troy coming on. This was Billy’s debut and he had a decent game on the right wing which was topped off with a great lob for our 5th goal. To their credit Eldene never gave up and the worked a good attack, which caught our defence asleep to pull a goal back.

With Eldene tiring we threw Lay and JP up front and Lay had a cross beat the keeper for Brad to slot home his 3rd of the day. It didn’t stop there and we pushed on again and this time Lay took his chance well and scored his first goal for the team to make the final score 7-1 to Shaw

Sunday 13th September League Match home to Highworth Town Jnrs. 2-2

A difficult match against a good team who we know will be there or there abouts at the end of the season.

The match started well with Shaw pushing Highworth back.  Mick latched onto a through ball and calmly slotted the ball past the Highworth keeper 1-0 to Shaw. Highworth came straight back at us and the defence had a few rocky moments but generally we were on top.

Then Highworth broke away and caught out our defence, the ball was played out to the right wing and their midfielder put the ball over Pete’s head and into the net 1-1 at half time.

We started well in the second half with Brad & JT pressing well but once again Highworth pushed back and slotted a one on one past Pete to go 1-2 up. Shaw fought back well and definitely had more of the chances but Highworth continued to be difficult. Then Peter Ffoulks picked up a loose ball and slotted it into the net 2-2

On another day, if our forwards had taken their chances and if we’d had a few off side decisions go our way, we could have nicked a win here. But take nothing away from Highworth they are a good well organised side and a draw was probably a fair result.

Sunday 6th September League Match away to FC Abbeymeads. Won 2-3

Well done to all of the boys involve in this weekends 3-2 victory over Abbeymeads. This certainly was a game of two halves.

With Abbeymeads playing 5 at the back we totally lost our way in the first half and slipped back into the bad habits of last season.

Abbeymeads went 1-0 up with a long kick over the top which none of our defenders picked up and their centre forward easily put the ball past Pete. Shortly after the defence were caught cold again and Chris gave away a very bad penalty which Pete then saved but Abbeymeads slotted in the rebound to go 2-0 up.

We continued to be on the back foot with Pete keeping us in the game more than once. Then finally we woke up and remembered how to play football. With half time approaching we started to move the ball around and it wasn’t long before Mick got our first goal, 2-1 down at half time.

The second half saw the introduction of Lay into Midfield and Troy into defence and we immediately looked more comfortable on the ball. With the midfield now ticking we were able to stretch the Abbeymeads defence and time after time Brad, Joel, Mick and Arnas found themselves in shooting positions. But it was Mick who slotted away two more goals and got his hat trick.

Special mentions must go to Pete in goal the whole of the back four and “little” Pete who as usual worked his socks off. It was good to see Lay, JT and Troy make their League debuts.
